Date played: March 3rd and 4th
Platform: Switch
Fast RMX is one of the 9 North American launch games for Nintendo Switch, and it's the only racing game. Whenever I've bought a console in my adult life, I've always bought a racing game to go along with it. Racing games are fast and flashy, so they're often a good way to see what a system can do.
Long story short, I bought Fast RMX. This is a futuristic racing game with crafts that hover slightly over the track, similar to Wipeout and F-Zero. It feels very much like an arcade game. Even the music and the interface feels straight out of the arcades.
I played a couple of championships in single player, featuring three races on a circuit, each with three laps. There's a good variety of ships, with 3 available off the bat and a dozen more that must be unlocked. My first impression of this game is that it's got the right title... It's so fucking fast! Even Wipeout doesn't reach these speeds...
Thankfully, the track design fits well with the insane speeds. There aren't any really sharp turns, at least not yet. Instead, the focus is on boost management. There are no weapons, no shortcuts, no sneaky tricks. The winner is the one who used the most boost in the most efficient manner without crashing like an idiot.
The first part of that is gathering boost pods on the track that fill the boost meter, which can be activated anytime. The second, more interesting part, is about changing your ship's color between blue and orange to match some speed strips scattered around on the track. If your ship's color matches the strip, you get a free speed boost. The game quickly becomes a rush to gather boost pods, use the right color for speed strips, and navigate the track's corners. It's simple, and it works amazingly well.
I also tried multiplayer with my two brothers, who came over to see what the Switch is all about. Using the Joy Con in their miniature form and the Switch in tabletop mode, we raced each other a couple times. The controllers worked surprisingly well for a game that is so fast and the framerate was rock solid.
Speaking of framerate, Fast RMX is a major technical achievement. It looks really good, particularly in portable mode thanks to the small, high quality screen. It's blisteringly fast, keeping a solid 60 frames per second at all times. It's really special seeing something like this run on a portable device. Plus, the whole game is less than a gigabyte!
There's an 8 player online mode available, so after I unlock a few ships, I'm gonna give that a go and see how I do against real players. I love what I've played of Fast RMX so far.
