Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze

Date played: March 1st
Platform: Wii U
Session fun rating: 8/10

I completed the third world and made lots of progress in the fourth. Cannon Canyon was a gauntlet of barrel cannons, as the name implies. There were some really cool camera angles during some of the bigger cannon shots. The place was littered with explosives and required fast reflexes.

Rickety Rafters was filled with mechanical devices that had to be activated to progress. Pulling on vines and stepping on plates moved platforms and other devices around for DK to progress. Bramble Scramble was an awesome climb through a spiked level. Cranky Kong was very useful here as he could survive a fall into the brambles.

I took on the third "K" level, the tough bonus levels. This one wasn't too hard compared to the last one. Electrified platforms and fast moving cannon barrels made up the bulk of the level. I died a handful of times, but I mastered this one pretty quickly. Then I fought the third boss, a relatively easy battle against three mandrill baboons that swung from vines, armed with hammers and bombs. The last phase of the battle was pretty tough, as they spammed tons of bombs and moved very quickly, but I got through on my first try.

World 4 is water themed. Unfortunately, water levels, as good as they are here, are never as good as the main game. The controls work well, but naturally, DK is slower than on land. Deep Keep was the first level, a long swim among dangerous spikes, fish, urchins and strong currents.

The highlight of the world so far has been High Tide Ride, an amazing mine cart level that featured track switching, similar to what is seen in Sonic games and Ratchet and Clank games. The dynamic camera angles made things easier and cooler to look at. Amiss Abyss looked cool too, as it was an underwater silhouetted level. At points, I had to scatter special fish to light up the area a bit. It was fun to look for secrets in the dark waters.
High Tide Ride was amazing!

Irate Eight was another dangerous swim where giant octopus attacked DK with it's tentacles through cracks in the background rock wall. This one had some really tough parts towards the end where I had to avoid the tentacles, falling rocks and a rising ink screen shot by the octopus. Sea Stack Attack is a regular platforming level filled with rotating spiked planks. Finally, I played Rockin's Relics, a rainy voyage through ship wrecks and bouncing spiked spheres. I still have a secret level to play as well as the "K" level before taking on the boss.
