A Boy and His Blob

Date played: August 5th
Platform: PS4

My daughter and I were looking for a new game to play yesterday afternoon. When we browsed her folder on PS4, we stopped on A Boy and His Blob, a 2D puzzle platformer originally released on Wii. I even own the Wii version, but I never played more than a few levels. The game looks fantastic, as it's all drawn by hand. However, it's unfortunate that some of the backgrounds look a little too pixelated. Either way, this is a pretty challenging puzzle game so far.

Each level has three hidden chests to find and one special jelly bean. To get them, the boy and his Blob must solve a variety of puzzles. The blob is really special, as he can transform into a number of special items, such as a ladder, a hole, an anvil or a trampoline, among others. My daughter was pretty helpful on some of the puzzles, thinking of different ways to approach some of the harder puzzles. She was rarely right, but it still sparked many new ideas.
This swamp is scary and challenging
We completed about 8 main levels, and 5 or 6 bonus levels. The bonus levels are unlocked by collecting all the treasure chests in a level, and they typically focus on one particular mechanic. For example, one of these was a simple but difficult parachute dive.

The best thing about A Boy and His Blob is the incredible animation. Every little action has such an incredible amount of detail, it just looks wonderful. The puzzles are fun too, and are getting really complex, more than the game's childish visuals would lead you to believe.
