Chrono Trigger

Date played: November 6th
Platform: Vita

I reached the jet bike and had to race a local racing pro to reach another portion of the map. The race itself was pretty simple, since I only had to use the boost at the right time to win. The Mode 7 graphics look great though, offering lots of speed and visual flourish. On the other side of the race track, we found an abandoned lab along with a mysterious humanoid robot.

Lucca managed to turn him on, and he was so grateful for our help that he decided to join us and help us at the factory, where time portal is waiting. Robo is an adorable, but tough robot. He punches enemies, has lasers and can heal his team. I decided to leave Lucca behind at the lab and took Marle and Robo with me.

Robo
I love using Robo in combat. He's big, he's strong and he's tough. The only problem is that he's really slow, so I usually give him a speed accessory to help him a bit. We headed to the factory to find the time portal. This is easily the biggest dungeon yet, as it was set on multiple levels, had a ton of little secrets, many battles and even a couple of elevators. Enemies are stronger than before, but there was nothing that was particularly difficult.

At the end of the dungeon, Robo finds his peers, a set of 6 humanoid robots. Robo was really happy to see them, but they attacked him violently, claiming Robo is defective and needs to be destroyed. They damaged him enough to render him inactive, so Crono and Marle fought the robots without Robo's help. After beating them, we dragged the poor robot back to the lab where Lucca fixed him. Robo was touched by her actions, and decided to join us in our battle to save the world from Lavos, the entity that destroys Earth in 1999 A.D..

When we jumped into the portal, we were surprised to be transported to a weird area called the End of Time. An old man greeted us and explained that time travel must be limited to 3 people or less at once, or the fabrics of time begin to deteriorate. This is just a clever way of forcing the player to travel with only 2 companions at once.

We also met an odd creature that thought us how to use magic. Crono learned lightning magic, Marle learned water magic and Lucca learned fire magic. Robo isn't alive, so he can't learn magic, but his lasers can deal shadow magic damage. We must now return to 1000 A.D. to begin our journey to stopping Lavos.

Back in 1000 A.D., we landed on a different continent, a place where monsters live in little houses and cultivate a hatred of humans. They also worship Magus, the legendary wizard who has been mentioned in both 400 A.D. and 1000 A.D.. I found a nice dude who sold me some new weapons, then headed into the only available area, a large cavern system.

I didn't get a chance to go through the whole dungeon, but the gimmick here is that only magic damage works against the enemies. I brought Robo and Lucca with me, leaving Marle's strong healing back at the End of Time. I figured Robo would be good enough healing for now.

I wasn't wrong. Having Lucca along was really great since her fireball spell is powerful and she has a lot of MP. However, Robo wasn't such a great choice due to his weak and expensive lasers. I had to use a few Ether potions to keep up the healing too, which wouldn't have been a problem with Marle. Surely there will be a boss fight soon...
