Man, I fucking love my Vita. It's the best device for playing PS1 games, including Chrono Trigger. I played it quite a bit while watching a hockey game on TV, enough that I completed the first dungeon, first boss and returned to the year 1000 A.D..
After going through the portal and landing in a forest, Crono quickly discovered that he had traveled back in time to the year 600 A.D.. The people have lost their Queen, but when Marle showed up, right before Crono, they mistook her for the real Queen. They look very similar, and I learned later that Marle is in fact a descendant of the Queen, which explains the resemblance.
This is all fucked up though, because Marle then disappears from the world, as in this new timeline, her ancestor was never saved, so Marle was never born. Lucca, Crono's friend and the girl who invented the time portal with her dad, joins Crono in their search for the real Queen, so that Marle can be born in the future.
It wasn't too long before a third party member joined us, Frog. Frog is a human-sized frog warrior who has sworn to protect the Queen. He wields a large sword and can cast a healing spell in battle. Lucca has a fire attack and a little gun. As I fought wild monsters in the forest, my team learned a few tech skills, including some dual techs. These are attacks that require two party members to team up and attack together. They are usually much stronger than normal tech skills.
Together, my team discovered a secret dungeon underneath the region's church. Monsters have been taking the shape of humans to slowly take over the world, so it's up to us to stop them and rescue the Queen, who is being held in the depths of the dungeon.
I have to say, just going through a dungeon like that and fighting enemies was a ton of fun. The combat system is interesting enough, and the enemies are funny and varied. I loved this place. There's even small bits of dialogue here and there during dungeons, which is nice. The boss was rather simple, but I think this is normal for a game's first boss. I just had to attack him and keep my team healed up.
The trio then rescued the Queen and returned her to her castle. Frog left in shame, as he failed to prevent the kidnapping in the first place. Lucca and Crono went back to where Marle had disappeared and thankfully, she reappeared because the Queen had been rescued. After saying good-bye, the team left to find the portal and return to 1000 A.D..
Lucca left to go back home, and I escorted Marle back to the castle. That's when the chancellor accused Marle of disappearing on purpose to gain power... or something. I'm not super clear on what's happening, but I know Marle and Crono are in trouble.
